The Royal Trophy

The Royal Trophy - a team event pitting the European Tour against the best of Asia will be taking place in January. Joe Ozaki captains the Asian team and Jose Maria Olazabal will be subbing for Seve Ballesteros as the European Team captain. The latest news is that Olazabal has picked Oliver Wilson for his team. Wilson joins Paul McGinley who was selected the other day.

The official website can be found HERE. I checked and the team listings weren't posted yet. Hopefully they will be soon.

Unfortunately the Royal trophy is not creating as much buzz as people had hoped fore. It seems Asian golfing sensation, Jeev Milkha Singh, will not be participating in the Royal trophy this time around. That really does leave the tournament’s standard in doubt considering the fact that the best player in the region does not want to play in the tournament. The tournament has also been facing lots of difficulty and was not even played this year for a very bizarre reason. Apparently because someone in the royal family in Thailand was not keeping well but one suspects it was more because the sponsors backed out and hence the tournament was not played.

If for nothing else, the tournament deserves to be played for Seve who has been recuperating from his stint in the hospital. Olazabal who is captaining as a replacement would surely hope his team can retain the trophy. A lot of Asian golfers are really talented but if they end up missing out on the tournament and if the cream of Europe does not rate it important enough then they might as well forget about hosting it again.

Cheers
